Elmhurst College World Music Series 2013-2014
The Elmhurst College World Music Festival is now a SERIES! Musicians and dancers from a wide range of cultures and styles will be on campus throughout the 2013-2014 academic year. This year’s theme is KONTRAS! MUSIC OF CONTRASTS. Cultures represented include Russia (cellist, Ian Maksin), Japan and Korea (flutist, Jennie Oh Brown), Mexico (Mariachi Real de Jalisco), Spain and Latin America (Duo Tandem guitars, Elmhurst College Guitar Ensemble), Brazil (percussionist, Geraldo de Oliveira), concluding with the KONTRAS String Quartet representing the music of Japan, Russia, South Africa, and the US. The Elmhurst Philharmonic Orchestra and the Elmhurst College Dancers will perform in the Main Concert.
The Elmhurst Philharmonic and Elmhurst College Dancers bring to the stage three world-class artists to blend their talents in this exciting concert. Mariachi Real de Jalisco will begin the concert with a festive atmosphere, performing great Mexican classics both alone and with full orchestra accompaniment. Cellist and composer Ian Maksin will perform a world premiere solo composition featuring folk music of Russia, as well as Liadov's 8 Russian Folk Songs with the Elmhurst Philharmonic. World-class flutist Jennie Oh Brown, whose artistry and versatility span a broad range of styles, will present a solo composition of music native to Japan, and will solo with the orchestra in Robert Smith’s depiction of the invasion of Inchon Beach during the Korean War. This eclectic concert will conclude with an all-time favorite inspired by the music of Argentina, Blue Tango by Leroy Anderson, featuring the Elmhurst College Dancers.
