Elmhurst College World Music Series 2013-2014
The Elmhurst College World Music Festival is now a SERIES! Musicians and dancers from a wide range of cultures and styles will be on campus throughout the 2013-2014 academic year. This year’s theme is KONTRAS! MUSIC OF CONTRASTS. Cultures represented include Russia (cellist, Ian Maksin), Japan and Korea (flutist, Jennie Oh Brown), Mexico (Mariachi Real de Jalisco), Spain and Latin America (Duo Tandem guitars, Elmhurst College Guitar Ensemble), Brazil (percussionist, Geraldo de Oliveira), concluding with the KONTRAS String Quartet representing the music of Japan, Russia, South Africa, and the US. The Elmhurst Philharmonic Orchestra and the Elmhurst College Dancers will perform in the Main Concert.
The Elmhurst College Guitar Ensemble, led by director Steve Suvada, will perform exciting music of Spain and Latin America. The group will feature soprano Susan Dennis, music/artistic director of Elgin OPERA and performer in Love and Fairy Tales, A Taste of Italy, and L’Elisir d’Amore with the Elgin company. Lawrence Johnson, writing in the Chicago Tribune, noted that “Dennis was delightful from the get go, her high-soprano singing and charming stage presence is hard to resist.”
