Geraldo de Oliveira started playing percussion professionally at the age of fourteen in his hometown Belo Horizonte, Brazil. He moved to the United States in 1975, where he continued to develop his skills as a musician and an educator, performing, recording, and studying at the American Conservatory of Music, in Chicago, under Mr. James Dutton. Geraldo has been privileged to work with all major bandleaders in Chicago, and presently is the percussionist for the Lake Side Singers, and Andy Tecson’s musical productions “The Jazz Passion” and “Bending Towards the Light”. Geraldo performs regularly in the Chicago area with different groups including Trio Copacabana, Paulinho Garcia, and Planeta Azul. The Elmhurst Percussion Ensemble, led by director Bob Rummage, is honored to perform with Geraldo in this workshop/concert.
Elmhurst College World Music Series 2013-2014
The Elmhurst College World Music Festival is now a SERIES! Musicians and dancers from a wide range of cultures and styles will be on campus throughout the 2013-2014 academic year. This year’s theme is KONTRAS! MUSIC OF CONTRASTS. Cultures represented include Russia (cellist, Ian Maksin), Japan and Korea (flutist, Jennie Oh Brown), Mexico (Mariachi Real de Jalisco), Spain and Latin America (Duo Tandem guitars, Elmhurst College Guitar Ensemble), Brazil (percussionist, Geraldo de Oliveira), concluding with the KONTRAS String Quartet representing the music of Japan, Russia, South Africa, and the US. The Elmhurst Philharmonic Orchestra and the Elmhurst College Dancers will perform in the Main Concert.
